Sport and physical activity play a very important role in the lives of the pupils and staff at Mahoonagh NS and every effort is made to ensure that all pupils have access to a sport they can partake in and enjoy.

Athletics training begins in the first term of every school year and in the past few years Mahoonagh NS have competed in the County Schools Athletics Day, sending over 50 pupils to compete after a number of weeks of training in the school yard. Our school caretaker, Noel Guina, who has a keen interest in Community Games, GAA and fitness has volunteered his time to introduce Atheltics to the pupils. We always have huge interest entering the competition each year in Patrick’s Well and have been very lucky to come home with gold, silver and bronze medals as well as team medals each year.

We have also introduced Basketball as a sport for 4th, 5th and 6th Class girls at Mahoonagh NS, as we felt there was far less sporting opportunities for Girls than Boys on the school sports scene. Just this year, our Basketball team were narrowly defeated by one basket in the West Limerick Primary Schools Basketball Blitz. This was a fantastic achievement for the girls who just took up the sport under the guidance of Mr. Keane, Ms. Kennedy and Mrs. McAuliffe in the past two years.

Every year we send a boys and girls team to compete in the FAI Primary 5s Soccer Tournament in Limerick and have always enjoyed a great day out and a bit of success! This year our amazing group of girls reached the last teams of the County and participated in the Limerick County Finals Day! Our boys team narrowly lost out on qualification on scoring difference.

The central role played by GAA in the school and the time afforded it for training after school every week reflects the importance of Hurling & Football in the local community.

The Feohanagh/Castlemahon area has long been considered a GAA heartland and this love of our national games is fostered and nurtured within Mahoonagh NS.

In the 2017-18 school year, we have had huge and unprecedented success with both our boys and girls teams enjoying many faous wins and enjoying themselves immensely. Though success is nice and is always to be welcomed, we at Mahoonagh NS place a huge emphasis on enjoyment and participation while playing our national games. Teams in 2017-18 were coached by Mr. Kelly, Mr. Keane, Ms. Kennedy & Noel Guina (School Caretaker).

The crowning glory of this historic years centred around our Girls Football team and Boys Hurling team. Both of those sides are West Limerick Division 1 Champions and indeed our Girld Football team went on to win the County Division 1 Football title. Our boys competed very well in their County semi-final. Both of these teams are also reigning West INTO Mini 7s Champions for 2018.

Each year West Limerick pick the best players from their schools to represent West Limerick in inter-divisional competitions at the Gaelic Grounds Limerick in both Football and Hurling for boys and girls. This year we had 11 selections in Mahoonagh NS, a great achievement. Ben Murrihy (Football & Hurling), Johnny Field (Football & Hurling), Tomás Roche (Hurling), Ciarán Kenny (Hurling), Lucy O’Brien (Football & Camogie), Olivia Meehan (Football), Sarah Doody (Football) and Maria Cagney (Camogie) all represented West Limerick against the other three divisions and indeed both the Ladies Football and Camogie teams won their competitions, with our own Lucy O’Brien captaining the Ladies Football team to the Larkin Shield win.

Each year, our 4th Class have the opportunity to take part in cycling lessons for 6 weeks in the school yard. This is part of our Active flag activities and our PE curriculum. We are very lucky to have John Clancy come to our school with his age appropriate bicycles and safety equipment to teach our 4th class pupils everything they need to know about cycling safety and correct technique.

Swimming is a skill which serves people well throughout their lives. Indeed, it can save lives. All children attend the swimming lessons, as this is part of the P.E. programme in the revised Curriculum. Children in 3rd and 4th class have the opportunity to attend a 6 week swimming lessons programme at Askeaton Leisure Centre. The children are taught by experienced swimming instructors who work through a structured programme.

Gymnastics takes place in term three for the whole school each year in the hall with Mark. Every pupil regardless of starting ability gets the opportunity to learn gymnastic skills at their level. A fun, safe, educational, developmental and social environment is created for individuals to experience the sport of gymnastics.
