Mahoonagh N.S. is a Roman Catholic Primary School in the village of Castlemahon, situated 5 minutes from the busy town of Newcastle West. The current school opened in 1968 and many changes have taken place since, with the school seeing considerable expansion in the recent past.
There are currently 15 teachers working in, and 219 pupils attending, Mahoonagh N.S. under the guidance of Principal Yvonne Condron and Vice-Principal Karen McAuliffe.
Our teaching staff is supported by a hardworking and enthusiastic SNA and Caretaker staff. There are currently 11 classrooms/learning support rooms in the school, spacious playing yards, a school playing field and use of the Community Hall next door, which is a great asset to the school.
The school endeavours to cater for all students, to foster the many talents of its pupils and to provide an environment where academic excellence co-exists with the enjoyment of extra-curricular activities and events.
Mahoonagh N.S. has a reputation for putting on a very good show when it comes to our Communion and Confirmation Days at our community church, Grandparents Days or any other school events, like our recent 1916 Commemoration Day for example.
We take great pride in this and always enjoy involving our pupils and the local community as much as we can in these events. Mahoonagh N.S. has a long and proud tradition of caring greatly for all of its pupils and strives to continue that tradition well into the future.
We aim to provide an appropriate, stimulating and broadly challenging education for all of our pupils. As a community of learners, we recognise the diversity of learning styles, talents and needs among our pupils. We encourage their efforts and celebrate their success, in the belief that this is the key to developing positive attitudes, self-esteem and confidence in our students. Mahoonagh National School supports the principle of inclusion of children with special educational needs.
At Mahoonagh National School we endeavour to enhance the self-esteem of everyone in the school community, to encourage the pupils to have respect for themselves, for other people and for property and to develop their sense of personal responsibility. We aim to prepare our pupils for their place in a modern multicultural society by actively promoting equality and by celebrating the diversity we have within our school community.
